From June 18, 2018, until August 2, 2018, I was the Site Director for the (Astrophysics) Summer Science Program at CU Boulder. As such, I had an apartment in the Bear Creek apartments just off the main campus by about half a mile or so.
I had 36 high school participants and 4 teaching assistants (TA) under my care, housed in one of the dorms nearby. They did most of their work in the Sommers-Bausch Observatory (SBO). They had some late nights of asteroid observations, and I would pop in and say hello when I was out for my evening walk. Some nights, we’d play board games, like this one:
There were several deer that hung out near the SBO. Sometimes, you couldn’t leave because they were sitting against the door.
On my walk to campus, there was a large duck pond. I tried to convince a TA that I had brought her a fresh corn dog, but she didn’t fall for it.
Some nights, I’d stop by Cosmo Pizza and get a giant slice of pizza. They were open late, so even when the participants had a late night ~2 am, the pizza place was still open.
My actual apartment was a one bedroom, and it looked like this:
The scenery around my apartment looked like this:
I thought I’d return the following year, but I was not selected as Site Director again, so I may never return to CU Boulder in this capacity. Either way, summer of 2018, this was my temporary home.
I’ll probably add more photos some day, as I think I have more on my old phone.
