Over the past few years, my fish tank has become less and less populated, until there were only five fish left. Last night, we added 3 platies, a yo-yo loach, 5 neon tetras, 6 glo-tetras, and 3 zebra danios. Now the tank is alive, colorful and well!

I have other plants coming up, including a slew of peas, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, lettuce, radishes (ready here soon…), and okra. I also have one lonely sunflower.
I have added MN QSOs today. I think OK will be next.

I can’t believe August is half over. I am still running around like crazy getting stuff done. Yesterday, I finished registering for my class at Mississippi State, returned a ton of keys here, worked on stuff for EMRTC, updated the department webpage and figured out a bunch of things that needed figuring out for this semester’s lab. I also updated my DX4Win logs, though there is more work to be done there.
Website-wise, I added WI QSOs today. MN will be next, I think.

Wednesday, 8-12-09 at 7:43 MDT

First day of school, and I think we’ll make it. The kid is getting dressed, breakfast has been served and eaten, lunches are packed, etc. The first day of most of our routine. When we start school, everything has to be perfect, as almost every second is allocated.
Garden-wise, we have a few healthy pepper plants, some cherry tomatoes ripening, healthy okra, lettuce, cucumbers, zucchini, radishes, and peas coming up. The beans suffered from the pillbug invasion, but are coming back. We have one sunflower coming up as well. Also, thanks to Aunt Barb, we have some fresh basil growing in the house. I expect the chives, parsley and cilantro to come up any day now as well, but the basil is quite prolific. We put a ziplock bag over each pot to raise the humidity a bit, and they have seemed to like that.
WX Report: 76.8°F, 53% humidity, sunny.

NWS Forecast: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south.

Friday, 7-31-09 at 9:30 MDT

Cash to Clunkers is a horrible program. Here’s a fine example of a ‘clunker’ being destroyed:Tough Volvo. Your tax dollars have the purpose of killing reliable automobiles, sacrificed to the environmental gods and to the car companies that already received bailout money.

Monday, 7-27-09 at 21:24 MDT

It is amazing how much can change in a few days. On the 17th, I was deciding whether to go to the eastern shore of Maryland to visit relatives or to Virginia Beach. Actually, I was going to do both, one on Saturday and one on Monday. I chose to visit on Saturday, and it is a decision that I am glad I made. After a pleasant visit with the family on Saturday night, I returned home and went to bed. Sunday morning, I found out that Grandma had an anyeurism and would not recover. She passed away on Tuesday, her 80th birthday. I will post more about this later.
We are currently west of Oklahoma City, having rearranged our travel schedule to attend the memorial service that occured on the 25th.
I’m not sure what license plates I am missing for a 2nd time around. I did see several HI plates, which is often the hard one. I think I’m missing like SD and WY.

Friday, 7-17-09 at 23:56 EDT

It has been an entire week since my last post. Since then, we have been to Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Kittery Point, ME, visited my grandparents, attended a Nationals game, hung out with some old friends, attended a funeral of an old friend, and toured DC. I’ll post more about all of this stuff at a later time.
I managed to get all 50 states in the license plate game, so I started over. At this point, I have like 30-some states for the second time around.

Friday, 7-10-09 at 10:23 EDT

I updated my Wyoming QSO page.
Yesterday was relatively uneventful. We got to sleep in a bit, which was nice. I did manage to drive down to Rhode Island, a new state for me.
I picked up another 17 QSOs (184 total), and 3 new counties. Still waiting on that Hawaii plate.
NWS Forecast: Sunny, with a high near 76. Northeast wind around 7 mph becoming southeast.

Thursday, 7-9-09 at 13:29 EDT

Yesterday, we walked around in Boston, watching the tall ships come in for Sail Boston. I guess it’s an event they have every year, so it was pretty neat. After that, we took a maze of metros and buses to get to the New England Aquarium, which was well worth the trip!
Today is pretty convoluted, so I’m not sure what to post yet. I’ll probably update this tomorrow and let you know.
No new QSOs, counties or license plates.
NWS Forecast: Areas of drizzle before 9am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Northeast wind around 9 mph.

Tuesday, 7-7-09 at 18:17 EDT

I updated my camping page.
We arrived in Boston this afternoon in time for the first part of the conference. Boston is crowded, rainy and cold in July. I thought the Boston accent was an exaggeration, but it isn’t. I’ve heard several people speak, but I had no idea what they were saying.
I added 21 QSOs in 6 new counties. I also added RI to the license plates, leaving only HI.

Monday, 7-6-09 at 23:42 EDT

Today, we ventured from Mentor, OH to Buffalo, NY and are en route to Syracuse. A little behind schedule, following a wonderful visit to Niagara Falls and Duff’s (wings). We caught up with Mike and Dawn, who recently (as in today) moved to Buffalo, so that was fun.
I added four new counties (NY is a new state for me!) and 16 new QSOs. Still haven’t seen HI or RI license plates.

Sunday, 7-5-09 at 10:54 EDT

We had a great Independence day! First, we visited a beach on Lake Erie and spent some time there. After that, we watched the Indians beat the A’s 5-2. After that, there were fireworks at the stadium. I’ll post photos of all of these later on.
We are headed to Joe’s church to see him play guitar and then off to visit another friend. We’ll try to hit up the Case campus as well, to photograph Dad’s old dorms.
No new counties or contacts, but I did see a DE license plate, bringing my total to 48.
NWS Forecast: Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. North wind between 6 and 8 mph.

Sabbath, 7-4-09 at 14:07 EDT

Happy Independence Day!! Hopefully, North Korea won’t nuke us and we can enjoy the holiday!
Yesterday, we visited with family south of Cleveland. Good times were had by all!
Today, we’ll go to a beach on Lake Erie and then to a ballgame to see the Indians stomp the A’s again. They’ll have fireworks after the game.
No new counties, QSOs or license plates.
NWS Forecast: Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. West wind around 13 mph.

Friday, 7-3-09 at 10:44 EDT

Happy Birthday, Stephanie!!
Yesterday, we visited with Jane for lunch and then with Joe, Jenny and Seth for dinner.      No new counties, QSOs or license plates.
NWS Forecast (for Mentor, OH): Scattered showers, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 70. West wind between 14 and 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Thursday, 7-2-09 at 0:54 EDT

Last night, we ended our run in Michigan City, IN, after a nice visit with a few friends. Today was mostly rainy and nasty, so after a working lunch at Bob Evans, we headed out for Mentor, OH.
I added 6 new counties today, and raised my trip QSO total to 129. No new license plates.
Time for an ancient monthly summary:
Books read: 1; You can Survive by Jere Franklin
Books of the Bible Read: 1; Proverbs
Periodicals Read: 15
HF Contacts made: 140
Best Morse Code Score: none, mostly listneing to QSOs

Farthest Distance Traveled: Michigan City, IN
Biggest Accomplishment: Getting the minicourse go-cart started… now I need to ‘un-wreck’ it

Tuesday, 6-30-09 at 20:45 CDT

Last night ended up being long. We ended the night in Jackson, MN, a few hours short of our orignial goal. However, it was late, so we figured it was better to turn in then than it was to drive for a few more hours. We stayed at the Jackson Econolodge.
Today has been a chilly and drizzly day across MN, WI, and IL. We are currently headed to Chicago to see some old friends. We took 90 all the way, with a few sandwiches for lunch.
I was pretty active on the radio today, adding 15 new counties and (WI and MN were new states for me), 51 QSOs (108 total). Having only three states left in the license plate game, I picked up no new ones today.

Monday, 6-29-09 at 23:58 CDT

Last night, we stayed at Ann’s Motel in Wall. This morning, I got up and worked on some stuff for EMRTC while I hit up the Wall Drug buffet. After a while, we left Wall and stopped at a NAPA for a new air conditioner belt. It was worth the time and money to have the AC working again!! Soon after that, we left for the Badlands.
I had never been to the Badlands, but I highly recommend it. It cost $15 to enter, and it was worth every penny. We spent about four hours there before heading east through the remainder of SD. We stopped at a rest area and cooked dinner on our propane stove, as we watched the sun set behind some storms. We are currently still driving, about to cross into MN.
I picked up two new counties in SD, and have a total of 57 QSos on the trip. As far as license plates, I am only missing Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Delaware. We’ll go through RI and DE on this trip, so hopefully we’ll see Hawaii. For those of you who think that’s pretty hard, it is, but we normally see HI on these long trips and miss states like VT or DE. I did see an Aruba plate today, which I’d never seen before.

Sunday, 6-28-09 at 20:14 MDT

Last night, we stayed in Cheyenne, WY, as there was a brewing festival in Ft. Collins, and there were no hotel rooms available.
Today, we took I-25 through WY to US-18, then to US-385. We just finished a tour of Wind Cave in South Dakota, and are headed towards Wall, SD for the night. We will likely try to see Mt. Rushmore from the road as we pass by.
So far, I picked up 3 new counties, and am currently up to 45 HF contacts (including Dad!) and 40 states in the license plate game.

Saturday, 6-27-09 at 20:50 MDT

I am typing to you live from just south of Pueblo, CO, for Day 1 of our epic road trip. We are coming into a little rain, which we have tagged off and on for most of the afternoon. We got off to a later start than we anticipated, but I expect we’ll still get in at a somewhat reasonable hour. Our goal for the evening is Fort Collins, CO, so we’ll see how we do.
So far, 0 HF contacts, 22 states in the license plate game. I’ll update this each day.

Tuesday, 6-23-09 at 7:41 MDT

28!!! I was thinking to myself the other day that there is an Alice In Chains song where he sings the line, ‘Next week, I’ll turn 28…. I’m still young’, and as a 14 year old hearing this song, I laughed and thought ‘no you’re not’. I really hope I was wrong!
I updated the storm chasing pages some more, leaving only two days of chasing undone. Hopefully, I’ll get those online tomorrow.
Our garden features a few new sprouts: 3 okras, 2 squashes, and 1 bean. I have 4 tomato plants, mint, and 8 pepper plants (3 with peppers) that are also doing well.
