Wednesday, 8-27-08 at 8:06 MDT

I had my first day of education class, and already started my Mississippi State course. I don’t think it will be too hard to stay on top of things this semester.
In the last few days, my free time has been dedicated to updating my DX4Win logs, as I have 512 QSOs to add. Eventually, I will update the QSO pages here, but that will be at a much later date.

NWS Forecast: Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph.

Sunday, 8-17-08 at 22:32 MDT

We had a minor problem. I was supposed to be in ABQ to pick up the better half. Instead, my fuel pump failed outside of Spanish Fork, UT. I have attached a few photos, thanks to Google Earth here and here. Now, we broke down in Utah County, Utah on a Sunday. NOTHING IS OPEN. Some nice people stopped and gave us a ride back to Spanish Fork and we were able to call a tow truck from there and tow the car to the only garage open on Sunday. Unfortunately, they won’t work on the fuel pump. We towed it to another garage which opens tomorrow and said they’ll get it in first thing tomorrow morning. Then we rented a Ford Taurus X and got a hotel in Provo for the night. Ugh. Hopefully, we’ll get back into town tomorrow.
On a more positive note, I’m up to like 72 new counties and well over 400 QSOs. At some point, I’ll have to log all of them. Right now, some are on a digital recorder while others have been logged in my logbook. When I get back to Socorro, I’ll have my work cut out for me logging in DX4Win.
I will hopefully post some photos from our trip soon. We have lots of cool photos from all over the west. All said and done, we went through TX, NM, AZ, NV, CA, ID, UT and will go through CO before we get home.

Sunday, 8-10-08 at 10:29 MST

We made it to Flagstaff last night, and we’ll make it to Tonopah, NV by tonight. When I get up tomorrow morning, I’ll run the new counties to Reno.
I don’t know where all we will go when we are staying in Reno. I think we’ll make a trip around Lake Tahoe and I think we’ll go to Virginia City for a day and ride the train. Our trip home will involve crossing through the rest of NV. We’ll cross into ID, and spend the night in Idaho Falls. The next day, we’ll drive up and barely cross into MT, then drive down to Price, UT for the night. The final day, we’ll run from Price, UT, through the rest of UT, clip the corner of CO, and through northwest NM to Albuquerque.
So far this trip, I’ve picked up like 45 new counties, and well over 200 QSOs.

Wednesday, 8-6-08 at 22:04 MDT

I’ve had my time zones wrong in this file for around a month!!
On this journey, I’ve picked up 26 new counties, 198 QSOS and spent a lot of time at the conference. The conference is only half of the day tomorrow, so I’ll run east and pick up a few more counties, and then I’ll pick up a few more on my trip home from here on Friday.
The highlights: I left Sunday morning and drove to Wichita Falls, TX. Monday morning, I got up and ran a few counties on my way to Dallas. I had lunch with Matt, who was enjoying his first day in his new career. After lunch, I headed down to Austin. I looked for the Waco memorial but had no such luck finding it. Instead, I made a huge loop to get a few more counties. I arrived in Austin around sundown and so I scouted out where the conference will be and where I should park. As it turns out, I found free parking not too far away from the convention center. Yesterday morning, I got up and attended several sessions there, having lunch and dinner at the convention center. Today, I attended quite a few more sessions, and had dinner not too far from my hotel. Who knows what tomorrow will bring!!
I also learned that my laptop will not charge with the wireless card plugged in. It’s kinda strange. At least it’s hot swappable, so I can take it out when the battery starts to run low.

Off to a late start today.
I finished logging in DX4win, now I need to start updating the logbook on my website.

Yesterday was pretty busy. I logged a bunch of time working on the manipulator to no avail. I also programmed my police scanner, potentially fixed my APRS tracking, and installed a DVD writer on my computer. I managed to log a few more days worth of QSOs in DX4win. We also hung out with our friend, Stephanie, for a bit. I worked on all of this while they played in the garden.
WX report: 62.4°F, 21% humidity, clear.
NWS report: Sunny, with a high near 90. North wind between 10 and 15 mph becoming calm.

I didn’t fix my Sears. Apparently, the catch that keeps the shells from ejecting into the rest of the gun is worn. It’s apparently built similar to the Remington 870, so I might still be able to fix it.
I am still logging my QSOs in DX4Win. Once I finish that, I’ll update the log here. I also need to add Storm Chase 2008 pages and SIA Conference pages.
WX report: 79.0°F, 25% humidity, sunny.
NWS report: Sunny, with a high near 93. West wind between 10 and 15 mph.

Sabbath, 6-7-08 at 7:49 MDT

I might have fixed my Sears and Roebuck 20ga. It wasn’t feeding properly, so it was essentially a single shot. There was a wooden dowel used as a plug for hunting in the magazine tube. I’m not sure it was straight, and binding the spring, causing it not to feed. We’ll see.
WX report: 64.6°F, 25% humidity, sunny.
NWS report: Sunny, with a high near 94. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to between 20 and 25 mph. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph.

Friday, 6-6-08 at 8:49 MDT

QSO tally from the trip: 408 QSOs in 40 NEW counties, bringing my total counties to 181, and 668 QSOs for the year.
WX report: 66.4°F, 30% humidity, sunny.
NWS report: Sunny, with a high near 87. Southwest wind between 5 and 15 mph.

Thursday, 6-5-08 at 7:13 MDT

My sensors work! Now all I have to do is wire them together and install them on the manipulator. Hopefully.
Mom, Dad, Jimmy and Jessica got hit with some bad storms last night. I’ll catch up to them later and see how bad it was.
WX report: 64.0°F, 35% humidity, partly cloudy.
NWS report: Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Breezy, with a west wind between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Red flag warning, fire weather watch, wind advisory all in place.

Finding a DC power supply in the materials department is tricky… They either put out the wrong voltage (at the wrong polarity), or have tiny fuses which are almost always blown.
WX report: 71.6°F, 23% humidity, sunny.
NWS report: Sunny, with a high near 92. Windy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph increasing to between 25 and 30 mph. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Red flag warning, fire weather watch, wind advisory all in place.

Tuesday, 6-3-08 at 7:31 MDT

I have returned to Socorro, making almost 6000 miles on this past journey. I’ll add up all the totals later.
Back to the daily grind for me. Today, I will turn in travel paperwork, finish repairing the manipulator, getting ready for some demos, unpacking, turning in work paperwork, paying rent, depositing checks, updating logbooks, and working on some modeling.
WX report: 70.5°F, 22% humidity, sunny.
NWS report: 94°F hi, west wind 5-10 mph increasing to 15-20 mph, mostly sunny. There is a red flag warning for our area.

I fixed the date on yesterday’s post, as it was on June 1, not May 1.
We made it to Kingman, AZ last night. We stayed in the same hotel, the Silver Queen Inn, which is a pretty good hotel.
Yesterday’s journey took us from San Jose, CA through Fresno, CA to Kingman, AZ. In Fresno, I stopped by to see Scott, an old friend of mine who graduated last year with an MS in Materials from NMT. He seems to be enjoying his job up there and is having a good time in CA.
Today marks the last day of our trip. I’ll recap the whole journey at some point over the next few weeks, complete with photos. Tomorrow, I’ll go into work and get set up to teach Brownie Scouts about science. We’ll do a bunch of demos, including the pouring of molten glass, which is my favorite demo. I’ll finish installing the sensors on the manipulator as I am imagining the parts have been delivered. I’ll also run around and take care of contract and travel paperwork. Yes, tomorrow will be a busy day.

This marks my first trip to CA! We are in our hotel in San Jose, CA, getting ready for the conference.
I am officially the new chemical engineering instructor at New Mexico Tech!!!

Thursday, 5-29-08 at 9:50 MST

We made it to Kingman, AZ last night, and will be en route to San Jose shortly.
I only pulled 19 QSOs yesterday, but I finally picked up Cibola and McKinley counties in NM.

Wednesday, 5-28-08 at 9:59 CDT

Yesterday’s chase took us through southwest Oklahoma, only to see some rain showers. There was some promise of storms, though the system morphed into a line of rain and a little wind. We targeted Altus, OK, based on the predicted CAPE, the tiny hope of shear, and the predicted intersection of a warm front, dryline and outflow boundary from yesterday’s storms. Instead, we had no upper level dynamics, both fronts stalled, and the dryline never made it that far east. We ended up seeing some mountains (in OKLAHOMA!) and beginning our trek west. We spent the night in Tucumcari, NM.
I managed to get another 38 QSOs, pushing my total for the trip to 334.

Tuesday, 5-27-08 at 8:54 CDT

This is technically the last chase day, though we may only half-chase as there is only a small risk area. If it looks like it will storm, we’ll stick around; if not, we’ll begin our trek to CA.
I have managed to get 296 QSOs on the trip so far. These QSOs were in 28 new counties and 1 new state (SD). I think I have now operated from 20 states.
