10/2/16: Daily Post

Yesterday, I slept in a bit.  I’m not sure why, but I have been sleeping in off and on the last few days, and it is quite annoying.

When I did get out of bed, JoAnna and I went on a 2.43 mile run. We took Dog-Dog with us, and 2.43 miles was about as far as he could go.  I guess one of my steps is quite a few of his.

In the afternoon, I went to the National Weather Service, where I helped launch another balloon, as well as made one VHF contact as WX5ABQ.

In the evening, I went grocery shopping and did a bunch of cooking for the week.

Overall, it was an uneventful day.

Yesterday, I started out the day with a 5.13 mile run. It was not as long as other runs I’ve done in recent history, but the last bit of it was up the big hill along Southern.  I will post my map soon, though this map got messed up.

One complaint I have with MapMyRun is that if I pause my run and then restart it, it jumps and calculates the distance I moved while I paused. This was a huge problem yesterday, as I had stopped running, fiddled with taking a screenshot unsuccessfully, and then walked home.  Once I arrived home, I accidentally unpaused my workout, and the GPS updated my location.  This showed that I ran the last three quarters of a mile almost instantly, and in a direct path.  I wish I could disable this part.

After my run, I had a group call for Landmark and, while I waited and listened, I weeded my garden.

In the afternoon, I did some grocery shopping and then went to the National Weather Service for the afternoon.  We had some heavy rains and thunderstorms that passed right over the NWS office, so that was fun to see.  I also tinkered with their amateur radio equipment, as it has not been in use for quite some time.  My goal is to get it all up and running and perhaps get a few folks active on the air.

Yesterday was a messed up day.  I had not set my alarm properly, so I missed the early bus to the train station.  So instead of getting to the bus, then to the train, then to Albuquerque, spending the day relaxing, and then going to the NWS, the schedule was all messed up.

As I started to figure out what to do, I got an email about my new schedule for APS.  Instead of West Mesa HS and John Adams MS, I instead now work for Atrisco Heritiage HS and George Sanchez MS, with a new schedule.  This new schedule means I will have to move my NWS time anyhow.  I think I will work NWS on Sundays.

However, in spite of the confusion around what was happening net, I was able to get quite a few things set up for the NMT school year, which begins on Monday.  All in all, things are working out there.

In the evening, I commuted home on the late bus/train without incident.

I started out yesterday by going on a 5.63 mile run.  It was my longest time and distance thus far.  I am getting to the point where time is the limiting factor, where I’m not able to expand much more without it being a significant time sink.

I also had a phone call that I will talk about as I know more.  It’s all good news.

After that, I made my weekly trek to the National Weather Service to launch the balloon, which was quite successful.  The balloon made it to 5.50 mb, which is my personal best height.

In the evening, I came back home and chatted with JoAnna and Joey on the phone for an hour or so before going to bed.

Overall, it was a good day!

Yesterday, I went for another five mile run.  I also posted the time and route in the Running page on this blog.

I also went to the Albuquerque National Weather Service (NWS) office and volunteered for a few hours.  We tried to launch a weather balloon, but it got delayed because of the approaching storm.  When we did launch it (after the storm had passed), there was quite a bit of bad data.  I was also there for the severe storms that happened across the area, and see how an event like this is handled.

In the evening, I drove home.  On Unser, I saw a car in the median, so I pulled over to help.  They had spun out on the rain-slicked roads and were now hi-centered.  There wasn’t much I could do, and the police showed up as well.  They had friends with a truck, as well as the rest of their car club (they were all Nissan Z series cars), to help pull them out of the median.  Anyway, I chatted with some of the car club folks for a while before heading home.

Overall, it was a good day.

Yesterday, I went for a four mile run in the morning. I added the map and elevation chart to my running page.  My time wasn’t great, but I was running entirely on hard surfaces, and the outer edges of my legs were hurting for the first bit.  I’d run a mile, rest for a minute, run the next mile and rest a minute, and then eventually, I didn’t need to rest any more.

I also put my Knewood TS-130S back in the Crown Vic and made a few county hunting contacts on 20 meters.

After my run, I went to the National Weather Service (NWS) to volunteer for the day. It looked like it was going to be an active day, but the surface moisture quickly mixed out and most of the developing cells puffed out.  Instead, I went through another balloon launch.

After the ballloon launch, I had recorded the last known latitude, longitude and altitude (around 107,000 ft!) and decided I would go look for the balloon as a strange way of geocaching.  I never did find it, even though I did get special permission from the Isleta Reservation to look on their lands.  I guess a lot happens to something as it tumbles 20 miles down from near space.

Overall, it was a good day.

Yesterday, I started out my morning with a 3.15 mile run.  This is the farthest run I’ve ever done, and it was only interrupted by a stray coyote that broke my pace.

I had JoAnna drive me to where I had parked one of my cars.  Except it wasn’t there.  After a few minutes of thinking about it, I remembered I had parked it elsewhere.  We didn’t have time to go get it, so she dropped me off for lunch, as I was meeting an old student of mine.

I had a great time visiting with my old student.  It’s always good to catch up to them and see and hear what they’ve been up to.

After lunch, this student drove me to the Albuquerque National Weather Service office where I volunteered for several hours.  I worked on an online class, started becoming familiar with one of their overlay programs, and then helped launch another weather balloon.

After that, I my adventure began.  I left the NWS and walked to the airport.  I figured I could catch the #50 bus to Central and Yale, and then catch the Blue Line to where my car was parked.  I walked to the airport, only to find that I had just missed the last #50 bus.  I was directly above it, but couldn’t get to it in time.  Instead, my only option was to then walk to Central and Yale to try to catch the last Blue Line.  I was able to do it.  All said and done, that was a 3.9 mile walk.

I came home, updated a web blog and went to bed.

Yesterday, I went for a two mile run and did a few things around the house.  I had piles of empty boxes to go to recycling,  some vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom, etc. to deal with.

In the afternoon, I went over tot he National Weather Service (NWS), where I started my first day as a student volunteer.  I did some online training and began my training in upper air, meaning I assisted with releasing the 0Z weather balloon.  The sounding data from that run is shown below.

my first sounding 6-11-16 0z
In the evening, I worked on a few projects and played FreeCol for far too long.

Yesterday, I spent the day working at Magdalena. Ilogged quit a few hours, and have a challenge problem to figuure out by Monday. It was for the geometry class review, except none of the teachers can solve it, either. I think that they did not give us enough information to solve the problem, or we have a problem with one of our assumptions, but I’ll see if I can figure it out.

Yesterday was super-busy as well. I found out that I was accepted into the National Weather Service student volunteer position, and will set up hours for that in the next few days. That is really exciting to me!

I also spoke with NMT and have a summer contract for one month of work in the works. This is good- I was going to have to do the work anyway, so I might as well get paid for it.

I also submitted my NaNoWriMo project to a publisher yesterday morning. We’ll see how that goes. I was actually happy with the book I wrote. In fact, I’m 1500 words into the sequel, as of yesterday evening.

Yesterday was the first day I got to see my new roof in the light. Here is what I started with:

And here is what it looks like now:

That sums up the highlight of my day. I did tutor at both West Mesa High and John Adams Middle, as well as turn in some paperwork for the National Weather Service in the afternoon. I also finished up my Spanish Homework and completed a Sociology exam.

Overall, it was a productive day!
